Ryan's Broken Hand...Nov. 3, 2010
The sixth grade had just finished their unit on Greeks. One of the teachers decided to do a Greek Olympics to finish it off. The kids went out onto the field and were able to do different "Olympic" activities. One was the javelin throw where the kids got to throw "javelins" which were actually foam swim noodles. Great idea! Another was the "discus" throw. The teacher had the kids spin around 3 times and then throw the "discus" as far as they could. The discus was actually a 5 lb. weight (she brought a couple of 5 lb. and 8 lb. weights) she had brought from her weight lifting set from home. Bad idea! The kids waiting their turn were not behind a protective barrier, they just stood behind a jump rope she placed on the ground. The kid throwing the weight was only about 6 feet away from those waiting in line. Ryan was waiting in line, and since he was up next was holding a weight in his left hand. The boy who was up, spun around 3 times, and over spun, sending the discus hurtling back towards those in line. It hit Ryan right in the hand, smashing his hand between the two weights. OUCH!! It broke his middle knuckle. His hand was swollen and bruised on the inside and outside. It was very painful! He got his cast on the following week after the swelling had gone down. Poor kid!! Dumb teacher!!
